INTRODUCTION

At present, F. J. Duarte is working on very compact narrow-linewidth solid-state dye laser oscillators in the visible spectrum. This research involves the evaluation of new lasing media, the development of new oscillator architectures, and the theoretical understanding of the coherent properties of these oscillators. An additional, and complementary area of research, is the application of Dirac's quantum notation to classical and semiclassical areas of optics such as interference, diffraction, refraction, reflection, and the propagation of electromagnetic radiation in dispersive tunable laser oscillators. For a description on the application of Dirac's notation to laser optics the reader is referred to F. J. Duarte, Tunable Laser Optics (Elsevier Academic, New York, 2003). An incipient area of research is the application of dispersive and interferometric physics to the development of aviation and astronomical instrumentation.
